All colors. Tokenized. 1/1.

Pure On-Chain NFT Art Primitives.

Find your colors. Own your colors, in the Colorverse.

The Colorverse is the first meta-NFT project. Programmable building blocks for on-chain, generative art.

Colorverse has created an ERC-721 based infrastructure for NFT artists to create collaborative, generative NFT art on the Ethereum blockchain. The idea is simple, but powerful and ingenious. Each NFT has its own ID. This ID is just an integer number. Colors are also just numbers. Colorverse token IDs ARE mathematically the color. The token IS the content.

This means having a Colorverse token in your account opens the door to a new, emerging genre of collaborative, generative, on-chain digital art. Colorverse tokens enable programmable on-chain art.

Color is digitally represented by different levels of red, green and blue. These levels go from 0–255. If you combine the 256 levels across the three primary color channels, essentially mixing different levels of red green and blue (RGB), you get 256³ = 16,777,216 different combinations or distinct colors. Each different combination of red, green and blue is a token, inextricably and naturally defined by virtue of its Token ID.

For example, at the two ends of the spectrum, Token ID 0 maps mathematically, intrinsically to #000000, the hexadecimal digital representation of black, the total absence of color. At the other extreme, Token ID 16777215 maps mathematically, intrinsically to #FFFFFF, the hexadecimal digital representation of white, the full inclusion of all colors.

The Colorverse is vast and you will find your own meaning in the colors you choose to own.

We envision Colorverse tokens as the building blocks for collaborative, composable, generative, on-chain art of the future.

We are excited about the possibilities of NFTs, especially how they will shape the arc of art history and the vast possibilities they can deliver. We see NFTs empowering artists not only financially, but also creatively. NFT art represents the confluence of the creative artistic process and new technologies.

Do you remember r/place? Do you remember battles that seemed to be fought between colors? Where pixel colors competed for existence through sheer will and volition. r/place was a grand and exciting work. We envision a similar dynamic between artists and collectors or even multi-collaborator works like r/place.

The evolution and making of r/place

Many of the visual art NFTs people produce, own, buy or sell today are digital images stored on a centralized server. The NFT as a token, per se, is usually metadata pointing to an image’s storage location on a centralized server.

We think decentralization is important and key to NFTs and the underlying art and we would like to see things as decentralized as possible. Recent developments in the NFT space point in the direction of art that is fully created, rendered and stored on-chain.

Each Colorverse token is not an end unto itself, but rather the beginning of an unimaginable creative journey into the future of art. A new medium that allows an original, unique artwork to spring forth as the interaction between collector and the artist.

Artists will begin writing smart contracts that generate SVG code and have the ability to deeply embed the collector’s Colorverse tokens into the NFT image, all stored as SVG code, on-chain.

Artists can create Smart Contracts (the NFT work) that collaborate with the NFT collector’s address in real time. The Colorverse exposes public view Solidity functions which allow a Smart Contract to know which token colors are held by an address. The artist’s contract can then convert the Token ID integer to a hex color string using a Colorverse public view conversion function and assemble arbitrary SVG code using those hex colors. This opens up a universe of possibilities to create collaborative digital art. We’ll talk more about this in future posts.

In this way, the artist’s contract can collaborate with the collector’s address/tokens in real-time, as the NFT contract can query the collectors address to find the colors owned by the collector and mint bespoke artwork based on the collector’s Colorverse tokens.

Where are we going with this?

In 1957, Marcel Duchamp wrote in “The Creative Act”,

“All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.”

This interplay between artist and collector is something David Bowie also talked about in 1999, bringing the technology of the internet into the discussion.

David Bowie on the interplay between Artist and Collector.

“…the actual context and the state of content is going to be so different to anything that we can really envisage at the moment, where the interplay between user and provider will be so… in simpatico, it’s going to, it’s going to… crush our ideas of what mediums are all about.”

“The idea that the piece of work is not finished until the audience comes to it and adds their own interpretation to it, and what the piece of art is all about is the grey space in the middle. That grey space in the middle is what the 21st century is going to be all about.”

Now, Colorverse is bringing NFTs into that same discussion, in the natural progression and evolution of the media, where art meets blockchain.

Heady stuff for sure, but we are at the very bleeding edge of how this technology will impact art and society. The Colorverse wants to be the atomistic building blocks of this amazing new artistic journey. Be a part of this journey and help us build the Colorverse!
